Tunnel René Konen - City of Luxemburg Renewal of the complete traffic management system Home > Projects > Tunnel René Konen Project Conception The Tunnel René Konen in Luxemburg-City has a length of 666 m and runs underneath the city centre. The tunnel traffic flows in one direction, without any parking lanes. The renewal was necessary as the existing system had been destroyed by a smouldering fire. In cooperation with a parnter from Luxembourg, Enco-tec S.A., Weiss-Electronic refits the complete traffic management system, using the most modern tunnel technology. Besides the new implementation of the traffic control system, the permanent signs are substituted by LED signal heads for lane signalisation and loops are installed for traffic data acquisition. The traffic control system with tunnel sub-center unit operates in automatic mode, but manual control is possible via four outsourced operating stations. Four display cross-section with variable traffic signs in LED-technology on the tunnel walls manage th traffic, displaying speed limits and ban on passing. Five more display cross-sections allocate the lanes via permanent lights mounted at the tunnel ceiling. The light-signal-system, barriers and signal heads at the tunnel entrance allow the closure of the tunnel (e.g. when the height-control was activated). In front of the tunnel, four prism openers are installed for traffic control resp. for traffic diversions when the tunnel is closed.
Start of constructions: September 2004. Begin of operation: starting June 2005. The project volume for the Weiss-Electronic-part amounts to approx. € 240 thousands. |
